Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is looking for an Equipment Operator 2 (EOL2) to join our dynamic team.  Do you enjoy working in the woods and operating heavy equipment?

The EOL2 position is responsible for the safe and productive operation of heavy equipment: dozers, rollers, graders, excavators, backhoes, dump trucks, and other miscellaneous equipment.

The EOL2 works in a forested environment performing maintenance on low-volume roads that provide access to DNR trust lands and help protect Washington State natural resources. Most roadwork is within 50 miles of the town of White Salmon in Skamania, Klickitat, and Yakima Counties.

This position is assigned a DNR pickup and enjoys a reasonable work-life balance with 40 scheduled hours a week, usually in the form of four ten-hour workdays.

Responsibilities:

  • Operation of heavy equipment safely and efficiently. Equipment includes, but is not limited to dump truck with a three-axle tilt trailer, dozer, motor grader, excavator, and vibratory roller.
  • Evaluate equipment for preventative maintenance and perform minor maintenance and repairs as directed by the Region Mechanic.
  • Performs forest road maintenance activities to ensure a usable and safe forest road transportation system that meets management needs and Forest Practice standards. Forest road maintenance activities include but are not limited to road grading, brushing, culvert, and ditch cleaning.
  • Completes assigned projects in accordance with the Heavy Equipment Plan.
  • Assists other programs as needed including road maintenance and snowplowing for timber sale activities, and heavy equipment operations for fire suppression activities.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Knowledge of state motor vehicle laws, including those pertaining to the use and transporting of heavy equipment.
  • Ability to operate a pickup-sized vehicle in a variety of weather conditions and terrain.
  • Ability to safely and efficiently operate heavy equipment such as CAT 143H grader, D-5 dozer, excavator, vibratory roller, 10 cubic yard tandem axle diesel dump truck and 20-ton tilt bed trailer, backhoe w/ front end loader, 40-foot boom truck, power brush cutter and various hand tools needed for maintenance (welder, cutting torch, etc.).
  • Ability to perform routine heavy equipment maintenance along with troubleshooting skills.
